In 2010, when the Bread Exchange was fairly fresh, I traded one of my bread with a girl from Venezuela, Melina, who was studying in Berlin and working for the Salto line from the German publishing house Wagenbach. Melina traded with me a homemade Dulce de Leche and I remember that I served it on a brunch on my Sunny balcony (images below). It was my first Dulce de Leche but since then I have cooked it many times myself.
Melina was the girl who pitched the Bread Exchange project to a journalist at WELT, Nina Trentmann, who made an article that really helped push the project further.
Melina is now back in Caracas since 2,5 years already. The other day I received a mail from her where she is giving her friends around the world her picture of what is going on in her country right now. It is not a pretty sight and I decided that it is important to share it. Melina has been part of making this project what it is and please take the time to read her mail here.

Thank you for sharing this, Malin! Since journalism always strives to be objective (a nearly impossible task), it is so refreshing (and important I think) to read a personal account of what is going on.
Thank you for sharing that thought Sasha. That is exactly how I felt.
Malin, thanks for sharing! Sasha, thanks for reading!…
I will try to keep you posted.
Hugs to You Melina!
