in A’dam again

I have never been in Amsterdam so close to Christmas before. It is beautiful, even though the city is lacking the snow. The color of the brick, the black rooftops and the cream color painted window wood is christmassy in itself.

But this is work and no time for Xmas retreats.

Well, there is one thing I do not compromise with when I travel.  I always need to visit a spa, hamam, massage or whatever offered where I am. It does not have to be fancy, but it can be.

Tonight we ladies are going to Zuiver, the spa outside Amsterdam. Karin has been talking about this place for quite some time, so I a curious. Personally I am a huge fan of the Art Deco sauna, but I always seem to bump into someone I know there. More often so then at Liquidrom in Berlin. But that is another story.

————————————–

Maybe you can help me.

My Dad and I have this deal.

I am bringing  food from my travels to the Christmas Table on December 24th. Last year I brought food from Barcelona, London, Berlin and Belgium. This year it is mainly German and Swiss things. It is normally different type of salamis, cheeses, pickeled vegis and sauces that goes well with meat and smoked fish. I will of course bring some really mature Gouda from Amsterdam. And maybe some mature dutch goat cheese (a new fav of mine). I would love to bring something else special from Holland. No sweets though.

Any ideas?

Hey, not sure how long you are in town for, but the organic Noordermarkt in the Jordaan is def worth a visit- lots of great cheeses and meats and local treats. (only on Saturdays)

Oh no, I leave friday. But any suggestion on special cheese stores, or other shops, are highly appreciated. I remember there is one at the 9 streets as well as one close to Rosengracht (further out, after the water, and then left where the tram goes). This one was special.

You should check out this place:

A friend of mine brought back cheese from there that was so pungent I could smell it from down the hallway of her apartment! Was really good, too :)

    Hello!

Or maybe a beautiful decorated peace of cake: you should try out ‘De taart van mijn Tante’ at Maria Heineken Plein and near to that there is a nice shop for bread it is called: ‘Bakken met passie’, Albert Cuypstraat 51 53.

Also you have the great small catering shops called ‘Stampotje’, they offer the dutch mashed potatoes, I am not sure if you can save it for a long time, but it is definitely dutch! (this is also in a side street of the albert cuyp markt, Eerste van der Helstraat)

You were right about the cheese store at the 9 streets, that is a good one.

And I just want to tell you about Hartog: At this bakery there is always a queue of people that want to get their fresh wholewheat bread! http://www.volkorenbrood.nl/

I hope you have a good time here in Amsterdam!

    Thank you all!

Went to Noordenmarkt last time, I would recommend it too. And Kaaskamer is also a great spot. They also make good saladdressings. Like the japanese one. Really nice if you like putting edame and wakame in your green salads!

Cheese should smell Nicole, I agree:)

@Meike, I was not able to go to the tarte place :( Will try it next time! The Volkorenbrood place is great though. Went there ones.
