I see your logic...but most people won't be able to get a hold of 'vintage' hiking boots, and modern hiking boots look... well, modern. So the style won't fit anyway, in terms of 'authenticity', if that's what you're going for. Also, the dirndl is just a traditional dress very similar to other traditional dresses in all the central-north area of Europe, similar to the Swedish one, as you note, and similar also the Dutch traditional dress, for example. The Dutch one is worn with those traditional Dutch clogs, so quite different from hiking shoes... Rather than hiking boots I'd wear Birkenstock clogs... or, for a personal touch -- with taste -- low Texan boots (which are similar in design to the Dutch clogs, and were originally work shoes...)

Heels with dirndl or any traditional dress are definitely kitsch (although that's how they are advertised in German websites, but then again, Germans and taste?), but ultimately there's nothing authentic about wearing a dirndl in the third millennium anyway.

The reason for Hiking boots is not really just a visual one. It is just that it is the most authentic thing you ca wear with a dirndl. Traditionally worn in the mountains, it is perfectly worn with the boots your in the same area. Think wine. If you do not know what wine to serve with what you are eating, just go for something regional to the dish you are cooking. A lot of times you wont go wrong. Like Foie Gras (maybe from Périgord) which is pretty safe to serve with a Sauternes).

I just realised I need to get myself a dirndl, the old-school version like the one in green at the bottom. And of course a pair of matching hiking boots to go with it.
