SF is one of my favorite US cities, I hope you are having an amazing time! My dear friend used to live out there and we pooled some suggestions for you. For breakfast, try Elite Cafe (Cajun) on Fillmore. For Cal-Italian: flour+water, A16, Locanda and Beretta, in that order. Brunch: Mission Beach Cafe. Juices & Sandwiches: The Plant at Pier 108. Also by the Piers, I really love going to Hog Island Oyster for some oysters, wine and beautiful view of the bay. It's nice to go before 5pm and the afterwork crowds. Terroir is a winebar focusing on mostly French/Organic - fun cave-like atmosphere & the staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. For Mexican: Colibri or Nopalito.
I hope some of these are useful and that you have a wonderful time out west!

Tartine definitely! San Francisco Ferry Building out on Embarcadero has lots of great food, and next to it is a Peruvian restaurant named La Mar that is great! And I recommend going to Berkeley across the bay, lots of great consignment and vintage shopping, and every kind of good local restaurant along San Pablo Avenue! Design*Sponge has done a good assessment of Berkeley places to go: http://www.designsponge.com/2011/09/berkeley-ca-city-guide.html

oh, i envy you! i was there in may and had the best latte at trouble coffe in judah st (next door to general store and only a few-minutes-walk away from the ocean).

i mainly relied on the tipps of heidi from 101cookbooks (http://www.101cookbooks.com/travel/sanfrancisco/), which was a good way to go. especially bi-rite market and the farmers market at ferry building where great.

i so wanted to go to the heirloom cafe for dinner as it looked great on the photos of kinfolk brunch, but couldn't make it. perhaps lucky you?! anyways: have a nice stay!

Dinner at Greens, which is located at a great location at Fort Mason. Ask for a table near the window in the more quiet backroom for moonlight views: www.greensrestaurant.com

Saturday farmer's market in the Ferry Building. SO GREAT!!! You will find amazing organic, local produce and baked goods. Not to forget the bluegrass bands playing in between the people. Also juices, all things gluten-free, vegan...and then inside are nice shops too.
Also, inside is a Blue Bottle Coffee shop. Hyped, yes, but for a good reason. Incredible coffee and a joy to watch the baristas prepare it (10-15min wait)

Oh, how I wish to go...
Have a great time!!!
